Excavations in Nazareth – vol. I
From the beginning till the XII centuryThe study embraces the whole time in which Nazareth was inhabited, but for the moment we limit ourselves to illustrating the first period which runs from the beginning up to the Crusades (XII cent.). Certainly from the historical and religious angle this period appears as the most interesting for antiquity, but the period that runs from Crusades to our day has also interest, especially from the artistic point of view.
The present study was completed shortly after the conclusion of the excavations of 1955. Since it had already been decided to rebuild the shrine and this could lead to new funds, we delayed sending the manuscript to the press. The wait was long but not futile. In fact elements exhumed on the occasion of the work have brought a new contribution which forced us to revise the material already elaborated. The new point was the evidence of the Christians of Jewish stock who had preceded those of gentile origin. The point furnished the key for undertaking studies on the original Christianity laid on new bases. The study embraces the whole time in which Nazareth was inhabited, but for the moment we limit ourselves to illustrating the first period which runs from the beginning up to the Crusades (XII cent.).
