The study embraces the whole time in which Nazareth was inhabited, but for the moment we limit ourselves to illustrating the first period which runs from the beginning up to the Crusades (XII cent.). Certainly from the historical and religious angle this period appears as the most interesting for antiquity, but the period that runs from Crusades to our day has also interest, especially from the artistic point of view.

The second volume on the excavations of Nazareth now appears, finally after years of waiting. This delay was not deliberate.

Il Neghev, il deserto che ricopre buona parte del territorio meridionale della Terra Santa, è terra incognita per molti pellegrini cristiani che visitano Israele.

Nel 1955, quando incominciammo gli scavi a Nazaret, balenava alla nostra mente ben poca speranza di ritrovare dei resti capaci di farci conoscere, sufficientemente, la storia religiosa del posto. Contrariamente ai nostri timori, vennero invece alla luce resti che ci permisero di ricostruire una cronologia abbastanza sicura degli edifici che si erano succeduti sul posto.

The order of description begins with the south, that is, from Jerusalem, listing first the villages east of the Jerusalem-Jenin road, then those west of the same route. Since some villages are located in the mountains and others on the plain, those located in the hill-country will be described first, then those on the plain, so as to keep a kind of single line of vision.

The Madaba Mosaic Map is a unique piece of art realised in 6th cent. A.D. as a decoration for the pavement of a church in the town of Madaba (Jordan) in the Byzantine Near East.

We believe that the contributions published, worthily honor his name and the history of the biblical lands on this side and beyond the river Jordan, which Michele Piccirillo loved and served his whole life".
